Where to buy? Choosing the Right
Supplier
With the integration of information technology into
every phase of life, computer dealers can be found in
every mall, shopping center, on the Internet and in
shops in every city and industrial park. In addition,
the computer superstores, office supply stores, catalog
companies, and systems integrators represent opportunities
for purchasing information technology. There are more
than 15,000 independent computer and information technology
dealers in the world today. So how do you choose the
right vendor?
Limited or No-Support Suppliers
If you answered all the questions as “yes”
in the Self Analysis Section you can probably buy your
information technology solution safely from a limited
or no-support supplier.
On-line and mail order catalog purchases
Many computer manufacturers and resellers sell directly
to customers on-line. This may or may not save you
money in the short term depending on the following
factors:
- Are you sure you know exactly what you need and
how well it will work with current or new systems
components you are purchasing? Correcting mistakes
is expensive.
- Have you compared the price with a comparable
configuration from an independent computer dealer/systems
integrator that can offer needed support? Resellers
pass on savings of their quantity purchases.
- Most systems purchased on-line will have to be
shipped back if they break. How long can you afford
to be without your system?
- What technical support is available to help set
up or configure the system, particularly if it is
going to operate on a network? There will probably
be no real support beyond exactly what you are buying
from the direct supplier.
- Will you need training or assistance with software
installation, usage, or conflict between products?
Some software is not compatible with others.
- Depending on your need for support, purchasing
direct will almost always cost you more in the not-so-long
term.
Superstores and Office Suppliers
The same questions and concerns apply as those listed
for purchasing on-line. Many of these large chains do
not have the employees on the retail floor who can provide
detailed technical assistance and direction, particularly
if you are trying to configure a network. Superstores
and office suppliers compete solely on initial purchase
price because it is all they have to offer. Furthermore,
many of these stores do not support or repair on site
what they sell. Repairs are frequently shipped off-site.
If you have exceeded the manufacturer’s warranty
period, these stores may not support it at all. Does
the store guarantee repair times? Remember, a system
that has a short life span or simply doesn’t meet
your needs is far more expensive than a slightly higher
priced system that does what you need, can be easily
and inexpensively upgraded, and lasts longer.
